Taj Mahal: the world’s most beautiful mausoleum and a symbol of Eternal Love

“A marble teardrop on the cheek of time,” this is how the poet Tagore defined the Taj Mahal, India’s symbolic monument and unrivalled masterpiece of Persian Art.
Its unique beauty and grandeur has made it one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

A story of love and diamonds
Over the centuries, the history of this famous monument has led it to become the emblem of pure and absolute love, superior to any ethnicity, culture and religion.
Legend has it that Prince Mughal Shah Jahan saw the young girl Arjumand Banu Begum at a bazaar in the Indian city of Agra while she was trying on a diamond necklace. Taken by her beauty, the future emperor fell madly in love with her and decided to buy her the precious necklace that she liked so much.
For political reasons, Arjumand could not be his first wife but she was the one Mughal Shah Jahan truly loved, so much so that he bestowed her with the title of Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “the chosen one” or “jewel of the palace” in ancient Persian.
After nineteen years of marriage, Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their fourteenth child. While on her deathbed, she made Shah Jahan vow that he would never remarry and that he would build a magnificent tomb in her honour.
Grief-stricken, the emperor fulfilled his wife’s last wishes and, when the Taj Mahal was completed, the emperor laid the most precious diamonds from his imperial treasury on his beloved’s coffin.

Salvadori’s Taj Mahal Collection is inspired by the legend and essence of the Indian mausoleum. The sinuous oriental shapes of the jewellery recapture the architecture of the palace and intertwine with each other to become a single brilliant heart, a guardian of loving secrets and a symbol of the intense and wonderful bond this feeling can create.
