Dream diadems

21 November 2019

What young girl hasn’t dressed up as a fairy-tale princess at least once in her life, wearing a magnificent gown? Long and puffy tulle skirts, shiny fabrics and the inescapable tiara of precious stones. A dream, to wear the crown even as an adult, which for some has become a reality.
From the Empress of Austria (nicknamed Sisi) to Kate Middleton, the clothes of the princesses have undergone some changes, but what has remained unchanged is the tiara: a precious accessory that symbolises the ancient stories and legends handed down from generation to generation.
Dances, official ceremonies and weddings are the privileged occasions to show off the most sumptuous and beloved tiaras of the royal ladies. What are the most famous and captivating?

The Sapphire Tiara worn by Queen Maxima of the Netherlands
The Queen of the Netherlands has one of the grandest tiaras in the world, with 252 carats of South African diamonds and 155 carats of blue Kashmir sapphires. An extra detail? The central stone can be detached and worn as a brooch.

Queen Rania of Jordan’s Boucheron bracelet tiara
Among the many tiaras owned by the Queen of Jordan, the Boucheron is her favourite. It’s shape is so thin that it appears more like a precious headband than a real crown.

Queen Letizia of Spain’s Floral Tiara
This piece is also extremely versatile, it can be worn as a tiara and as a necklace. Made in Russia in the 18
th century, it was donated by the dictator Franco to Queen Sofia for her wedding.

This list could not be complete without the favourite tiaras of the most famous Queen and Princesses from the old continent: Queen Elizabeth, Lady Di and Kate Middleton.

The Kokoshnik Tiara
Although it is not worn very often by the Queen of England, this tiara is one of the favourites of Elizabeth II. It has a classic design and features a small wall of diamonds, consisting of almost 500 stones set on platinum bars. The tiara has a fascinating story that links it to the Romanov family. Queen Alexandra had always wanted a tiara that she had seen worn by her sister Marie, the Empress of Russia. Upon the death of Queen Alexandra, the tiara passed to her daughter-in-law, Queen Mary, who bequeathed it to the current queen.

Diana Spencer’s Lover’s Knot
Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot
was made in 1912 for Queen Mary. Mary bequeathed the tiara to Queen Elizabeth, who later decided to give it to her daughter-in-law Diana Spencer as a wedding present. The tiara is a stunning sequence of diamonds and pearls that the “sad” princess loved to wear, but after her divorce from Prince Charles, Lady Di decided to return it to the Queen. It is now worn by Kate Middleton.

Kate Middleton’s Halo Tiara
The wife of Prince William could choose any of the Queen’s jewels to wear on her wedding day, and opted for the Halo Tiara. Created by Cartier in 1936, this tiara was purchased by King George VI for his wife (later the Queen Mother) and was given to Elizabeth on her 18
th birthday. This precious jewellery piece is literally studded with diamonds: 739 brilliant diamonds and 149 baton diamonds. A dream of diamonds that comes true.
